Trinity River Salmon fishing fantastic!
Weaverville -- Alex Ross of The Trinity Guide gave us this report: Trinity River fishing has been fantastic this fall, with high flows and fresh salmon continuing to push up the river system. We haven’t seen this many fresh, bright fish this far upriver during the fall in a long time—if ever.
More than 100 miles from the mouth, Trinity River salmon are typically showing quite a bit of color by this point in their journey. This season, however, we’re still catching a surprising number of bright, clean fish. They’re certainly not coastal-bright salmon, but the Trinity’s cold, clear water and rocky bottom help keep the fish in good condition, and the quality of the meat has been excellent.
Fishing has been outstanding, with limits coming most days and some days producing 10 to 30 hookups. These salmon are hot, powerful fish, and landing them can be another story altogether, but anglers are regularly getting their opportunities and putting fish in the boat.
Anglers are currently allowed to retain one adult salmon over 23 inches and one jack under 23 inches. Jacks have been a little spotty, but the opportunity to catch and take home an adult salmon has been very good.
It’s also encouraging to see what’s happening throughout the river system. Despite some of the criticism surrounding Trinity River restoration and higher flows, what we’re seeing firsthand on the water is a river full of fish. The additional water appears to be providing favorable conditions for salmon moving upstream, and this season has given us plenty of reasons to be optimistic about the fishery.
